Homemade Picadillo

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup green olives, sliced
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Begin by chopping the onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Slice the green olives and chop the fresh cilantro.
  2. Cook the Beef:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add Vegetables and Seasoning:
    • Add the chopped onion, garlic, green and red bell peppers to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine the flavors.
  4. Incorporate Tomatoes and Simmer:
    • Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, sliced green olives, and raisins. Stir everything together and bring to a simmer.
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • Stir in the chopped cilantro and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
    • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  6. Serving Suggestions:
    • Picadillo can be served over rice, with tortillas, or as a filling for empanadas. Garnish with extra cilantro if desired.
