Cafe de Olla (Mexican Spiced Coffee)

Café de Olla is a traditional Mexican coffee known for its rich flavor and aromatic spices. Perfect for a cozy morning or a relaxing afternoon, this recipe combines the warmth of coffee with the sweetness of piloncillo and the zest of cinnamon and cloves. Here’s how you can make this delightful beverage at home.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of ground coffee (medium roast)
  • 1 small piloncillo cone (or 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 cloves
  • Optional: a small piece of orange peel

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Water: In a medium-sized pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Add Spices and Sweetener: Once the water is boiling, add the piloncillo (or brown sugar), cinnamon stick, and cloves. If you’re using orange peel, add it at this stage. Stir until the piloncillo is fully dissolved.
  3. Simmer: Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse.
  4. Add Coffee: Stir in the ground coffee, then turn off the heat. Cover the pot and let it steep for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Strain and Serve: After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the grounds and spices. Serve hot in a traditional clay mug if you have one, to enhance the experience.

Tips:

  • For a more robust flavor, you can let the coffee steep longer, but be mindful that it can become bitter if left too long.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less piloncillo or sugar according to your taste.
  • Experiment with additional spices like star anise or nutmeg for a unique twist.

Enjoy your Café de Olla with a slice of pan dulce or any sweet pastry. This aromatic coffee is sure to bring a touch of Mexico to your home!
